“In the film that won the Cannes Palme d’Or, Iranian director Jafar Panahi employs the road movie genre. Defying bans and imprisonment, he reminds us of the violence of the regime and the scars it has left behind. Complex moral choices here intertwine with Panahi’s characteristic humor, lending the story an unexpected lightness. It is a masterpiece of political cinema, demonstrating that even under the most adverse conditions, Panahi remains one of the greatest cinematic humanists of our time.” (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
