The latest work by one of Ukraine’s most talented filmmakers, Valentyn Vasyanovych, takes us into Ukraine’s postwar future, with the director also starring in the lead role. The war has ended. A film director Roman is out of work, out of luck, and out of touch with his family abroad. Although the country has already been liberated, it is not quite the homeland he—and so many others—had long been yearning for. While his wife and daughter built a new life in Vienna, he stays behind—confused, restless, and convinced that things will get better. Eventually. Probably. Maybe.

“This dystopian tragicomedy chooses an unconventional way to speak about postwar wounds. By convincingly weaving fiction with reality, the film explores the country’s complex emotional landscape: although the war has been won, society remains deeply divided.” (Programme curator Giedrė Vyšniauskaitė)
