March and Nat are madly in love. But Nat suddenly dies from a mysterious respiratory illness. Their love transcends metaphysical boundaries – Nat returns as a vacuum cleaner manufactured in the March family factory. The family is against the couple’s strange relationship, but once they realize how useful Nat can be, they take her back. From then on, her role is to identify wandering spirits in Thailand and guide them into the afterlife. Most of these ghosts are people who have sacrificed their lives for democracy over the past 70 years.

“You might expect a lighthearted comedy about spirits living in vacuum cleaners, but A Useful Ghost offers far more. It is a haunting love story that blends fairy tale, romance, comedy, horror, politics, and queer themes. It is also a critique of capitalism and a warning that to build a healthy future, the past must not be forgotten. It is a call to resist totalitarianism by turning poetry and cinema into weapons.” (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
