Shu-Fen moves with her two daughters – I-Ann and I-Jing – to a cramped apartment in Taipei. The mother struggles to make a living running an unprofitable noodle stall at a night market, while the older daughter, I-Ann, works as a so-called betel nut beauty and is entangled in an affair with her boss. Left to her own devices in the hustle and bustle of the market, little I-Jing encounters superstitions: her grandfather tells her not to use her left hand, claiming it belongs to the devil. The girl starts to believe that her own body is committing evil acts against her will.

“The chances of falling in love with Left-Handed Girl are very high, so beware. It all started when director Shih-Ching Tsou’s grandfather told her that the left hand is the devil’s hand. From this deeply rooted and superstition-filled remark, she created this moving and incredibly well-written portrait of an all-women family finding their way through tradition, change, and everyday chaos, between Taipei apartments and glowing, buzzing night markets. For the ones who want to travel and cry, this is for you.” (Programme curator Margot Amadei)
