1987, Tokyo. Fuki feels out of place at home. With her father ill, she not only feels sad, but also lonely: her family’s attention is focused elsewhere. She has to take care of herself. Like many teenagers, Fuki indulges in fantasies, but in this girl’s case, there is a lot of truth in them. Fuki really does have the gift of telepathy. The transition from childhood to adulthood is not easy, and Fuki must walk this path without a map. Fortunately, there is at least some magic around her.

“In her previous film Plan 75, director Chie Hayakawa imagined Japanese society in the near future. And with her new work, she turns to the past – to 1980s Tokyo, at the time of her father’s death. The director avoids cheap sentimentality: death here is not treated as a tragedy, but rather as a riddle that a young girl tries to solve. The title of this poetic film comes from a gift her father gave her – a reproduction of a Renoir painting. Perhaps this is where the film’s dominant, warm, shimmering light originates.” (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
