Kabuki is a classical form of Japanese theatre, historically performed by men, renowned for its expressive acting, vivid costumes, and graceful movements. This art form captivates Kikuo, the son of a yakuza boss. When the teenager performs for the masters of kabuki for the first time, he is met with praise. But at that very moment, Kikuo’s world is turned upside down: the theater is attacked by another gang, his father is killed, and Kikuo escapes by hiding among the theater troupe. Thus begins his decades-long story. Which will prevail – the desire to create art or avenge his father?

“The epic story entices you to immerse yourself in the world of kabuki and discover its subtle beauty, behind which lies the cruel and exhausting pursuit of perfection, ambition, the dictatorial burden of tradition, and inevitable competition. The film not only revived interest in kabuki theater but also achieved unprecedented success in Japan, becoming the most-watched feature film of all time.” (Programme curator Giedrė Vyšniauskaitė)
