How are you, really?

Anders is finishing a course of treatment at an addiction rehabilitation center and is granted 24 hours to travel to Oslo for a job interview. Bathed in late summer light, the city becomes a map of his past wrong turns. Encounters with old friends, family members, and former loves further expose the time he has lost and his deep sense of alienation. Is it possible to start over when it feels as though life has already passed you by?

“Oslo, August 31st is perhaps the most painful installment of Joachim Trier’s Oslo Trilogy. Avoiding the cheap clichés of films about addiction, the director focuses on the psychological aftermath of recovery: shame, boredom, and the haunting weight of lost time. Trier meticulously captures the light in a café window or the distant sound of a party, as if the city itself were a character in mourning. It is a masterpiece of contemporary Scandinavian cinema – intellectual and emotionally devastating. (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
