Seven-year-old Maria and her mother live in a world of their own making, filled with all sorts of objects, boxes, and shiny trinkets. One night, their magical world collapses and ten years later, we find Maria living with a foster mother. Michael, a former foster child, comes to stay for a short time and this acquaintance opens the traumas of her past. With the help of a young man, Maria expresses her longing and her lingering mourning through strange, fetishistic games.
