In his latest journey, Werner Herzog takes us deep into the African jungle, where the line between mythology and biology becomes almost invisible. Together with a group of Indigenous people, the director sets out in search of the mysterious “ghost elephants” – a rare species which, according to local tribes, can disappear into the shadows of the trees and communicate through vibrations in the earth. But this is not a simple nature documentary; it is a story about human ambition to see that which does not want to be seen.

“What initially seems like an ordinary film about nature and eccentric personalities quickly takes on a different hue. Herzog shows the connection between the “heroic” conservation of nature and the privileged position of the conservationist, often arising precisely from the forces that destroyed that nature in the first place. Is this what environmentalism looks like in the 21st century: the West, having profited from the devastation of nature, now allowing itself to weep over what has been lost?” (Programme curator Vladas Rožėnas)
