Smells Like Teen Spirit
Donnie will die soon. He sees it happen. Even if he didn’t, a human-sized rabbit – whom he has been encountering more and more often lately – announces it to him. Moreover, the rabbit warns that the whole world will end in 28 days. The easiest thing for the viewer would be to side with Donnie’s parents, who, in search of help, send him to psychiatrists. However, the world of this film is not necessarily so straightforward. Is the rabbit right? Initially misunderstood upon its theatrical release, the film gradually acquired a cult – even legendary – status. See how to save the world.

“Jake Gyllenhaal’s Donnie has become a portrait of an entire generation of outsiders, and the creepy rabbit Frank is one of the most recognizable symbols of modern cinema. The film masterfully captures the fragile moment when childlike naivety collides with the inevitability of the end of the world, both literal and internal. It is a visually dense, philosophical, and deeply melancholic narrative that remains just as relevant even as it celebrates its 25th anniversary.” (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
