Films About Music
How do we remember cultural icons? This is the question posed by the fictional government department known as The Ministry of Not Forgetting. Two of its officials decide that much needs correcting in the mythology surrounding the life of true British stage icon Marianne Faithfull. Blending documentary and fiction, the ministry sets out to redirect attention to the singer’s extraordinary talent, long overshadowed by scandals and the label of “muse.” The film traces an artist’s life shaped by fame, creativity, and the relentless scrutiny of the public eye.

“Marianne Faithfull is uncompromising and straightforward here, as she was throughout her life. This film is not just a biography, but a kind of cleansing of tabloid garbage. Her presence on screen is enriched by abundant archival material – a vivid testament to the singer’s talent. The film features musical performances by Faithfull herself and her collaborators: Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Courtney Love, Beth Orton, and Suki Waterhouse. It is the charming rebel’s farewell message to us. (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
