Films About Music
The creators of The Brutalist return with a new epic. From the 18th-century Manchester enveloped in industrial smoke, you will be transported to the wild, untamed plains of America. This is a hypnotic musical journey with Ann Lee, the mysterious founder of the Christian Shaker sect. After enduring painful losses and persecution, she dares to believe in her divine vision: a world where men and women are equal, and spiritual purification is achieved through ecstatic movement.

“The Shakers were radical egalitarians, practicing social, spiritual, and sexual equality between men and women, and welcoming people of different races long before this became the norm. The film movingly depicts the transformation of the sect’s leader, Ann Lee, and the devotion of her followers to a utopian vision. Original Shaker hymns are transformed in the film into striking ritual dances, with music composed by Academy Award winner Daniel Blumberg.” (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
