In a harsh winter of 1899, Aimée arrives in a remote, isolated Alpine village. An educated republican, carrying the writings of René Descartes, she is appointed to teach the community’s children. Soon, however, Aimée realizes that her modern ideas – such as basic hygiene or the documenting of local folklore – are perceived by the villagers as a direct threat to their way of life. What begins as a clash of ideologies gradually turns into something far darker.

“Documentary filmmaker Louise Hémon makes her feature film debut with a mature work inspired by her own family history. The cinematography, reminiscent of the compositions of Pieter Bruegel’s paintings, blurs the boundaries between historical costume drama and folk horror – here one can see echoes of last year’s Vermiglio and Robert Eggers’ The Witch. The Girl in the Snow speaks about the “danger” that an educated and free woman posed at the dawn of modernity.” (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
