In 1944, Vermiglio is a remote village in the Italian Alps. Although the end of World War II is near, it has barely reached this place. The peace is disrupted by the sudden appearance of a young deserter, Pietro, a Sicilian who takes refuge in the schoolteacher’s house. A love affair develops between the soldier and the teacher’s eldest daughter. But Pietro keeps a secret, and secrets are also aplenty in the household that welcomed him so warmly.

“This sensitive and detailed family portrait unfolds like a rich, classic novel. Maura Delpero’s latest film deservedly won the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and became the first film directed by a woman in nearly twenty years to be submitted as Italy’s contender for the Oscars.” (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
