Johan, a reed cutter living in a remote village in the Netherlands, discovers the body of a murdered girl in a marsh. The gruesome discovery disrupts the routine of a man who is quietly farming and caring for his granddaughter – he becomes obsessed with finding out the truth about the girl’s death. What begins as a search for the perpetrator driven by a desire to protect his granddaughter, gradually turns into a mania, and tensions start to rise within the closed community. The dense reedbeds become the perfect place to hide a crime, fear, or even the truth.

“Reedland is not just another crime drama. It is a reflection on social exclusion, generational gaps, and moral and ecological decay. This ambitious debut by Sven Bresser became the first premiere by a Dutch director at Cannes Critics’ Week after a 27-year hiatus. The performance of non-professional actor Gerrit Knobbe provides the film with exceptional naturalness and authenticity.” (Programme curator Benita Paplauskaitė)
