Jim Jarmush Retrospective
A young Japanese couple travels by train to Memphis, the city where rock’n’roll and its legend Elvis Presley reigned. Their greatest wish is to feel a connection with their idol: to visit the recording studio where he worked and sit in the square next to his statue. For these fans, Presley is everywhere – they even see his image in Madonna and the Statue of Liberty. For an Italian stuck in Memphis, the King of rock’n’roll is nothing but a ghost of the past, and locals are tired of him. The three simultaneous stories are connected by Presley’s song “Blue Moon” playing throughout the film in the background.

“Jim Jarmusch’s Mystery Train is a mesmerizing, atmospheric journey through the heart of Memphis, Tennessee. With its eccentric characters, understated humor, and stellar soundtrack, the film paints a vivid portrait of a city steeped in musical history and cultural mythology. Jarmusch masterfully weaves together three seemingly separate stories, each capturing a unique facet of Memphis’ spirit and its lasting impact on those who wander its neon-lit streets. A must-watch for music lovers and anyone drawn to Jarmusch’s signature blend of deadpan humor and melancholic charm.” (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
