Jim Jarmush Retrospective
William Blake arrives in a remote town in the Wild West, where he has been promised a job as an accountant. However, he is late – the position is already taken, while his complaints are met with hostility by the factory owner, who pulls a gun on him. Feeling like an outcast lost in a foreign land, the young man takes refuge in a saloon and meets a woman there. Unfortunately, their encounter leads to conflict, forcing William to flee. Wounded and on the run from the law, he crosses paths with a mysterious hermit named Nobody, who becomes his spiritual guide.

“Even within the distinctive filmography of a director as unique as Jim Jarmusch, Dead Man stands apart like a nail that refuses to be hammered down. A Western reimagined as a journey from the world of the living to the afterlife. Existential philosophy and poetry— the latter woven directly into the narrative—is viewed through the lens of a filmmaker who examines everything, even death, with dry humour. A film for those who believe they’ve seen every possible genre blend and cinematic mood.” (Programme curator Vladas Rožėnas)
