In a Georgian village, where the wind whispers secrets in desolate landscapes, midwife Nina walks a fine line between duty and rebellion. She carries out abortions in secret, silently fighting the system that seeks to control women’s bodies. When a baby dies during one of her deliveries, a dark shadow falls over Nina. An investigation begins, revealing the hidden fears of a community teetering between change and tradition.

“With her masterful use of long takes, shot compositions that could make any horror filmmaker envious, and atmospheric sound design, Dea Kulumbegashvili creates a palpable sense of tension and unease. Using radical forms, the director portrays the illusion of modernity – a supposedly advanced medical system juxtaposed with the prejudices of a conservative society, superstition, and men’s desire to control women’s bodies. April is a viscous meditation on sexuality, social pressure, and women’s struggle for the right to decide for themselves.” (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
