The Payne family has built the perfect life in the countryside, surrounded by woods. Maria and Nik, raising their children without screens and teaching them farming skills, nurture a deep connection with nature. When tragedy strikes, this chaotic yet precious life takes an unexpected turn, forcing the family to start over. Director Silje Evensmo Jacobsen, who has spent several years filming this close-knit family, tenderly and intimately captured their struggle with grief and their journey of rebuilding life.

“This film is for those who dream of swapping the fast pace of the city for a more harmonious life in nature. A New Kind of Wilderness subtly explores how loss deepens our understanding of nature, which can become both a refuge and a challenge. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was awarded the Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinema category for Best Documentary.” (Programme curator Benita Paplauskaitė)
