A noisy wedding is soon overshadowed by a stroke suffered by the family matriarch, plunging her into a coma. The mother undergoes a breaking point and retreats to a mountain temple. The father leaves on a business trip to Japan, where he reunites with his first love and begins to wonder whether he could have lived a different life. The teenage daughter experiences the joys and pains of first love. Meanwhile, the youngest child embarks on a philosophical project: he photographs the backs of people’s heads to show them a part of reality they cannot see.

“When I first saw Yi Yi, I read a line about it that still describes the film better than anything else: it is one of those extremely rare works that contains an entire life. Everything that hurts, everything that brings joy, everything that draws us together, and everything that separates us into individuals. Yi Yi manages to capture not just a single feeling or state of being, but humanity itself and what it means to feel at all.” (Programme curator Vladas Rožėnas)
