Three years have passed since the death of renowned war photographer Isabelle Reed. As preparations begin for a retrospective exhibition of her work, her eldest son Jonah returns to his parents’ home. Once again, he must spend time with his father Gene and emotionally distant brother Conrad. This is an intimate drama about three men, each carrying a different memory of the woman they loved. And when a long-concealed truth about Isabelle’s death comes to light, the family is forced to admit: their silence is louder than the explosions on the front lines.

“The relationship between photography (and cinematography) and death has been portrayed in films many times. To capture a person partly means to kill them – to lock them in a frame, to deny the image the possibility of change, to limit the personality. To capture is to commit an act of violence. Trier’s film attempts to squeeze into the minds of those who, in various ways, are fleeing toward freedom or away from it. How important it is for them to discover themselves, although nothing is more terrifying. It is a film in which some great decisions and the answers to everything remain off-screen.” (Programme curator Vladas Rožėnas)
