After a party, a thirteen-year-old Alpha returns home with a crude tattoo on her arm. Her single mother, a doctor, panics – the wound raises suspicions of a mysterious disease that is spreading rapidly in society. Her uncle, who is struggling with addiction, also suffers from it, and the victims irreversibly turn into marble statues, and later into dust.

“Julia Ducournau, who became the face of radical contemporary cinema after her Cannes triumph with Titane, goes even further in her film Alpha, venturing deeper into her signature territory of body horror and social provocation. Alpha rejects the traditional boundaries of the genre – it is both an intimate and a ruthless thriller, transforming into an aesthetic, almost hypnotic experience. Ducournau once again proves that, for her, the body is not merely a biological unit, but a battlefield of political and spiritual struggle.” (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
