The life of 84-year-old DJ in Lithuanian premiere of the awarded documentary feature “Vika!”

“There is no escape from old age, but we can show its beauty”, says 84-year-old Vika, born in Vilnius, and a true star of the Warsaw clubbing scene. Her colourful personality’s life is depicted in the new documentary feature “Vika”; (2023) which will premiere in Lithuania at an exclusive HBO screening on March 25 th in Forum Cinemas Vingis.

Wirginia “Vika” Szmyt is a highly charismatic and stereotype-breaking DJ who spends her time surrounded by young people and refuses to grow old, saying that age is just a number. But when her health suddenly begins to deteriorate, Vika can no longer deny the passing of time. Will she find meaning in sharing the joy of life with other seniors by encouraging them to live their lives to the fullest? “Vika!” is a bittersweet portrait of a woman who intends to celebrate life to the very end, a true inspiration both for silver generation and our future selves.

Inspiration for both the older generation and the young

Vika is the oldest DJ in Poland, and maybe in the world. Born 1938. in Vilnius. A pedagogue by education, she worked with disabled children and troubled youth, for many years she was the director of juvenile prison. After retiring, she became a silver generation activist. She plays both at intergenerational dance parties and in the most fashionable youth clubs – always until the morning and in high heels. She breaks stereotypes with her clothes, behavior and lifestyle and does not intend to spend her old age “sitting like a geranium in the window”. She is sensitive to the needs of those whose voice is less heard. That’s why she never refuses an opportunity to support the elderly, the disabled, and LGBTQ+ people.

Documentary feature "Vika!" will premiere at the exclusive HBO screening on March 25 th at Meeting Point Vilnius, during Kino Pavasaris (Vilnius International Film Festival). Following the screening, there will be Q&A session with the director Agnieszka Zwiefka and film protagonist Wirginia “Vika” Szmyt, both present on site.

The film was co-produced by HBO Max and My Way Studio. It arrives crowned with the recent Best Director award in Baltic Focus program at Artdocfest in Latvia, and it was nominated for the Best Documentary Feature at this year’s Polish Film Awards ORLY.
