Two teenage girls dream of escaping their bleak industrial neighborhood. Kristina, struggling with a strained relationship with her father, wants to become a famous model and leave home as soon as possible. Marija, a newcomer trying to fit in, follows in Kristina’s footsteps. The girls have yet to understand what beauty and love truly mean to them, so they rely on their friends’ perceptions and mimic what is accepted in their environment. Competition, jealousy, dangerous company, and the promise of a better life push them into harming their bodies in increasingly extreme ways. Toxic, which began its impressive global journey by winning the main award at the Locarno Film Festival, is a film about the desire to belong and the price we pay in pursuit of perfection.
