Budapest, 1957. The uprising against the communist regime has just been crushed. Twelve-year-old Andor is being raised by a single mother, who tells him idealized stories about his father, a hero who disappeared in the camps during World War II. Andor believes that his father will return. However, a rough man appears in their lives, claiming to be the boy’s real father, and the world Andor has created for himself begins to crumble.

“The director of Son of Saul, László Nemes, returns with a new historical drama. He masterfully employs a child’s perspective to show that personal family trauma is inseparable from major historical upheavals. The boy’s gaze becomes the purest judge, assessing not politics, but humanity. The film reminds us that history is written not only in textbooks, but also in the scars parents leave on their children.” (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
