Five cities, five taxis, and one night. In Los Angeles, a sophisticated acting agent and a chain-smoking cabbie discover what’s most important in their lives. In New York, a former clown gives a ride to a young black guy no one wants to take. In Paris, a taxi driver encounters racism and, while driving a blind woman, realizes that blindness sometimes helps you see more than you can imagine. In Rome, a gossipy taxi driver confesses his sins to the archbishop. And in Helsinki, three friends in a taxi realize that there are more serious issues than the problems of their alcoholic friend.

“Before Coffee and Cigarettes, there was Night on Earth. Five taxi drivers, five different conflicts. Fleeting moments of camaraderie and sudden bursts of hostility. The film feels like a conversation with a stranger in a bar or an airport seemingly superficial, yet within that surface, you catch a glimpse of a life entirely different from your own. A life you may not want or fully understand, but for a brief moment, it feels right to step inside.” (Programme curator Vladas Rožėnas)
