Deceptively lured into Stalinist Russia to look for her daughter, actress Maria Leiko learns that she died in childbirth. Holding a motherless baby in her arms, Maria receives a job offer in a Soviet theatre and decides to stay for one season. However, the regime’s secrets and terrible repressions gradually penetrate her idealized world. She is forced to choose between fame and love for her granddaughter, between her beliefs and a totalitarian regime steeped in lies.
