“I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians” – these words, spoken in the Romanian Council of Ministers in 1941, initiated the ethnic cleansing of the Eastern Front.  Radu Jude, one of the most interesting European filmmakers, does not take us back to those times, but instead comments on this statement from a contemporary perspective. A young artist, Mariana, is preparing to recreate the historical event of 1941 in the city square. Based on thorough research, she hopes to create a powerful re-enactment that will awaken the historical consciousness of the townspeople.

“I believe that both cinema and film festivals can only be truly relevant when their themes resonate with the present moment, offering audiences valuable insights into today’s world. As always, Radu Jude’s razor-sharp blade slices through Romanian society, revealing that, despite efforts to remove it, the tumor of antisemitism continues to spread its historical metastases into modern-day life. Recent events in Lithuania feel like the echo of a (not-so-)fictional Radu Jude story. I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians draws viewers into a witty, tragicomic conversation about us and our present reality - to me, it’s the perfect festival film.” (Aistė Račaitytė)
