A Page of Madness x SANTAKA

Director Teinosuke Kinugasa’s silent film A Page of Madness remains one of the most radical experiments in Japanese cinema history, despite the fact that almost a century has passed since its premiere. The film tells a story of an old sailor who works as a janitor at a psychiatric hospital just to be near his wife, one of the patients. After she attempts suicide, he becomes determined to free her. The soundtrack was created and will be performed live by Santaka, a joint project of internationally acclaimed producer and Radio Vilnius co-founder Manfredas Bajelis alongside drummer Marijus Aleksa."

“For more than forty years, the film was believed to be lost, but in 1971 it was found in a can of rice by the director himself. Its success is first and foremost a testament to Kinugasa’s talent: he pushes the boundaries of 1920s cinema, exploring and expanding its possibilities. Through distorted and highly stylised imagery, dramatic effects, and intricate double exposures, he plunges the audience into a world of madness. The sense of alienation is further heightened by the cast, all of whom were members of an avant-garde theatre troupe.” (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
