While people struggle against time, trying to preserve paintings, the bodies of the dead, and their memories, microscopic fungi invade their space. They remind us that everything changes and must decay to be reborn. This is a story of transformation, where religion serves as the backdrop and microfungi become a metaphor. Inevitably, the objects we create decay, and eventually, so do we. Yet, when we look through a microscope, a glimmer of hope appears – unstoppable growth becomes a quiet, majestic triumph over death.

“We are transported into the world of fungi, quietly digesting our cultural memory. We see microscopic spores consuming medieval canvases, alongside the rhythmic work of art restorers – we witness the entire cycle of decay and regeneration. Aistė Žegulytė avoids a literal narrative – the viewer is invited to immerse themselves in the sacred silence of the cinema and listen to the language of the film’s nonhuman protagonists, the fungi. Here, cinema meets science and mysticism, revealing the beauty inherent in the process of decay.” (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
