Eighteen-year-old Marina, who lost her parents in infancy due to their drug addiction, travels to the port city of Vigo in search of traces of her father Alfonso. Her father’s relatives show no desire to connect – Marina’s resemblance to her mother reminds them of Alfonso’s dark past and his death from AIDS. The true story of her parents is preserved only in her mother’s diary, which records their passion and suffering. As Marina gradually unlocks more family secrets, she begins to get to know her parents, and with them, the traces they left in the memories of those close to them.

“After the films Summer 1993 and Alcarràs, director Carla Simón completes her family trilogy with Romería. Simón boldly examines the still-felt consequences of Spain’s 1980s drug and AIDS epidemic, avoiding cheap melodrama. This luminous culmination of the trilogy, inspired by the director’s mother’s diary, reminds us that imagination is an essential condition for healing family trauma.” (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
