The commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife, Hedwig, strive to build a dream life for their family just behind the wall of the camp. The violence that can’t be described in words or images reaches both the idyllic home and the viewer only in the form of ghostly voices constantly heard in the background. British director Jonathan Glazer’s historical Holocaust drama, based on the novel by writer Martin Amis, won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival.
