The program is presented by
Bucharest, 1989. A revolution is brewing, but first, the New Year’s Eve show must be saved! The director needs to find a replacement for a missing actress. Meanwhile, his son is planning to escape to Yugoslavia by swimming across the Danube. The son is being watched by a secret police officer, who is also trying to move his mother into a new apartment she hates. The moving is handled by a factory worker, who panics when his son sends a letter to Santa Claus revealing that his father wishes for Ceaușescu’s death.

“The perfect choice for Romanian cinema fans, The New Year Never Came marks Bogdan Mureșanu’s striking debut - a darkly comic yet deeply moving portrait of a society teetering on the brink of revolution. Through its interwoven character arcs, the film captures the absurdity and unease of life in Romania just days before the collapse of Ceaușescu’s regime. This unique and unforgettable look at a pivotal historical moment reminds us that even in times of political upheaval, the human spirit, and above all, a sense of humor, endures, and life, in all its chaotic beauty, goes on.” (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
