Screen 9
The sound of a warning siren has become synonymous with danger and invasion. This film, created in collaboration with artists, musicians, and thinkers, explores the complex history and cultural significance of the siren through evocative vignettes while also examining its role in shaping our perception of security, control, and the boundary between public and private space. From the ghostly streets of Fukushima to the snow-covered landscapes of the Baltic – listening to sirens takes us on an auditory journey that transforms our understanding of this ubiquitous sound and its impact on our lives.

“Aura Satz’s documentary Preemptive Listening is a sonic journey in which the siren—a sound often associated with danger and control—is transmitted anew as a form of creative expression and social commentary. Collaborating with visionary musicians such as Kode9, Moor Mother, Raven Chacon, Laurie Spiegel, and many others, the film assembles an entrancing collection of soundscapes, inviting us to listen more closely to the world around us. A film equally at home in cinemas and contemporary art galleries, it demands both your ears and your mind.” (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
