Imagine this: you’re casually mowing down pedestrians and firing rockets from a bazooka at police helicopters – when suddenly, out of nowhere, a blue-haired man appears and starts rambling… about Shakespeare?! At the height of the pandemic, as lockdown upended daily life and derailed their acting careers, Sam and Mark spend their days playing Grand Theft Auto. One day, they stumble upon a huge stage in the game, and a thought begins to form – what if the theatre they so desperately miss could be reborn here, in virtual space?

“Why do we need art? This is a particularly difficult question to answer. My answer is frustratingly simple – because we do. Art is an end in itself, much like a child’s game: created purely for the joy of creation. It can seem unworthy of the time spent. Still, for some of us, art gives meaning to existence like nothing else. Why stage Hamlet in a video game? On the surface, it is pointless. And yet, within that very pointlessness lies the essence of creativity itself.” (Programme curator Vladas Rožėnas)
