On the rough outskirts of North Kent, the daily life of a 12-year-old Bailey is marked by loneliness and neglect. Living in a squalid squat with her neglectful father and brother, she seeks solace in nature, birdwatching in open fields. There she unexpectedly meets a mysterious figure named Bird. At the same time, Bailey is forced to face harsh realities: troubled relationships with her estranged mother and the looming threat of violence. This newfound acquaintance sparks an adventure that will transform Bailey’s understanding of herself and the world around her.

“British director Andrea Arnold returns after a long break with a new feature film, maintaining the social realism characteristic of her works (Fish Tank, American Honey). Even while incorporating elements of magical realism in her work for the first time, Arnold stays true to her authentic and unpolished cinematic language. With a haunting soundtrack and memorable performances by Nykiya Adams, Franz Rogowski, and Barry Keoghan, Bird is a moving story about family and identity.” (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
