Lina’s life seems perfect: she lives in a cozy flat with a caring boyfriend and works in her favorite job at the Vilnius morgue. One day, the body of a deceased sailor is brought in. His wife claims to recognize him, but Lina is not convinced. This doubt sparks her curiosity, and despite the dangers, Lina becomes obsessed with the search for a missing sailor. The clues lead her to a port town, but the mysteries only increase. The film’s tense and harsh atmosphere allows you to deeply feel the meaning of johatsu – the vanishing of a person as if into nothingness. Where will Lina’s search take her and what is she really looking for?

Jōhatsu, meaning "evaporation" in Japanese, refers to the phenomenon of people deliberately vanishing without a trace. Though the term originates in Japan, the act of disappearing is seen worldwide. Documentary filmmaker and philosopher Nerijus Milerius teamed up with director Lina Lužytė to co-direct a psychological thriller exploring this unsettling reality. Why do some people choose to radically erase themselves from their daily lives? The filmmakers seek answers through the eyes of their protagonist, Lina. (Programme curator Karolis Žukas)
