An eight-year-old child is searching for a name which would feel right. She dislikes being called by her birth name, Aitor. The nickname Coco feels closer. She struggles with the fact that people keep addressing her in confusing ways. During a summer in the Basque Country among the beehives, she explores her identity alongside the women of her family and new friends. Eventually, it becomes clearer how to align the way she feels inside and is perceived by others.
“In terms of atmosphere, sensitivity, and family relationships, this film resembles ‘Alcarràs’, one of the last year audience’s favourites. The Basque debutant director uses the metaphor of the beehive, which deepens the understanding of how each family member is interconnected and dependent on the other. The beehive, like the family depicted in the film, is dominated by women, and the viewer observes how differently each of them understand what it means to be and to feel being a woman.” (Dovilė Grigaliūnaitė)
