25 years of independent Ukraine separate two gunshots. What connects them? VHS film brings us to 1996. 5 months before the moratorium on the death penalty, two old friends, a police detective and a forensic psychiatrist, investigate a murder of their colleague. After a long, complicated and personal investigation, they point to a man, who becomes the last victim of capital punishment. Their children grow up and try to comprehend the emotional inheritance from that time of unrealized aspirations and suppressed anger.

“Ukrainian director created a strong film with the aesthetics, characters, and themes familiar to us. Some have lived through it and remember, while younger audience will recognize the atmosphere of the time from the footage, broadcasts, and stories. These are the turbulent early years of Independence – corruption, crime, violence, insecurity. The inheritance of the Soviet era. The film reflects on how this negative legacy and traumatic experience are passed on from generation to generation. And highlights how important it is to break free from it as soon as possible.” (Dovilė Grigaliūnaitė)
