In the final part of "Arabian Nights", Scheherazade fears that the emotional weight of her stories may be her undoing. And so she decides to flee the palace and set out in search of joy and happiness. She meets her father, the Grand-Vizier, on a Ferris wheel, and he advises his daughter to lighten up the stories and thereby enchant the King once more. And so she resumes her narrative: “O auspicious King, in old shanty towns of Lisbon there was a community of bewitched men who, with all dedication and passion, devoted themselves to teaching birds to sing...” And with daybreak Scheherazade falls silent. The most light-hearted and playful volume of Miguel Gomes’ cinematic trilogy is dedicated to his eight-year-old daughter Carolina with the wish that when she grows up she’ll watch the movie, hoping that it will inspire her and that she’ll be happy.
