T.S. Spivet feels like an outsider among outsiders. A 10 year-old boy with a mathematical mind and a wild imagination, T.S. struggles to relate to his more outgoing siblings and eccentric parents. While his cowboy father and scientist mother raise the three children on their Montana ranch, T.S. hides himself away inside, drawing maps and inventing machines. When T.S. achieves one of science’s greatest ambitions and creates a perpetual motion machine, he is honoured with an award from the Smithsonian Institute. T.S. runs away from home, deciding that he must attend the awards reception in Washington, D.C. As he travels across the country by freight train, T.S. must learn who he can and can't trust, while coming to terms with some of his family's dark secrets.
