Y., an Israeli filmmaker in his mid-forties, arrives in a remote village at the far end of the desert to present one of his films. There he meets Yahalom, an officer for the Ministry of Culture, and finds himself fighting two losing battles: one against the death of freedom in his country, the other against the death of his beloved mother. Over the course of one day, he pushes beyond his own limits.
„It is a film that bravely unmasks the bias of Israel’s cultural policy. Also, a film–farewell to mom. It is also a film–therapy trying to digest the phantasmagoric experience of the Berlin winner Synonyms on its return to Israel. One could continue about the overlapping personal, political, and creative layers in it, but it is more important to mention the powerful energy, which Lapid delivers in the form of a film. It inspires faith in the importance of resistance and nurturing one's values.” (Aistė Račaitytė)
World Premiere: Cannes Film Festival, Official Competition, 2021
Awards: Jury prize, Cannes, 2021.
