Jean-Luc Godard's observation that "movies lie, not sports" is the starting point for this film. Julien Faraut, curator of the French Sport Institute's 16mm archival film collection, compiles an elegant and playful cine-essay of tennis legend John McEnroe at the height of his career, chronicling the world champion's fierce strive for perfection, frustrations, and the toughest loss of his career at the 1984 Roland-Garros French Open.
