City of Life and Death
Added to my films
This majestically produced film, shot in stunning black and white, sheds powerful light on the Rape Of Nanking, an event often described as the forgotten Holocaust of World WaJr Two. Set during the Japanese invasion of China in 1937, it offers an eyewitness account of the brutality of war and the human instinct for survival. True events are dramatised through the stories of key characters including a kind-hearted Japanese officer, the courageous leader of Chinese guerrilla fighters, a Japanese "comfort woman" and a Schindler-like figure who saved many civilians. "City of Life and Death" is epic filmmaking with an arresting human heart.
