A judge Constantino Zegarra prides himself on having never succumbed to corruption. He has a simple moral code, which he sees as a perfect reflection of the law. Being so efficient and strict results in Zegarra being hated with a passion by the more than 800 people he has put away. Through a series of events judge Zegarra finds himself first demoted and later shot, leaving him with minor injuries, but unable to speak. The police find no explanation for the crime and conclude that it was an accident. Convinced that he is the target of an elaborate conspiracy, Zegarra obsesses about the shooting and starts an investigation of his own, which calls into question his black-and-white perception of reality
